What is podiatry?

A podiatrist is a health professional who deals with foot conditions. And when you consider that the average person walks about 70,000 miles in their lifetime, you can see why it’s a service that’s in demand.

Sometimes called chiropodists (the terms are interchangeable but podiatry is increasingly used in the UK), podiatrists prevent, diagnose, treat and rehab all medical and surgical conditions of the feet and lower limbs. Specialisms include nail surgery, diabetic care, biomechanical assessments and foot posture related issues.

Why see a podiatrist?

The human foot is an amazingly complex piece of bioengineering, with 26 bones, 55 joints and a complex collection of ligaments and tendons. Many of us are unknowingly designed with small intrinsic abnormalities with may make us prone to foot and lower limb problems. These can cause injury and stop us participating in sports and leisure. From blisters or bunions to pain in the heels, balls or arches of the feet, to structural problems that affect the ankles, knees, hips, pelvis and back, you can’t afford to neglect your feet.

A podiatrist is trained to tell you why your foot functions the way it does and if you have a biomechanical dysfunction. They can diagnose and treat sports injuries and work closely with physiotherapists or refer you to a doctor if needed.

Come and try the footscan®

Here at Marple Physio we’re very proud of our state-of-the art gait-analysis equipment, which allows a bespoke, scientific approach to diagnosing and treating foot issues. The RSscan footscan® is a dynamic pressure system which allows us to look at exactly how your foot functions as you move. Advanced technology reads the pressure and force distribution in your feet at high speed, as you walk across the footscan plate. It helps us identify dangerous pressure areas before problems develop.

The footscan also helps us custom-make high-quality orthotics – in-shoe devices that correct foot position to relieve functional or anatomical problems. Our orthotics have a carbon-fibre shell, a lifetime guarantee and fit the majority of shoes. They can be tailored to fit your individual needs or sporting activities.

Combining this cutting-edge technology with our podiatrist’s expert observation and hands-on assessment skills means we’re confident the footcare you’ll receive at Marple Physio is second to none.
