Specialist continence physiotherapy treatment at Marple Physio
Our specialist physiotherapists can equip you with the knowledge, skills and support necessary to manage, treat and often completely resolve continence problems. Research shows that with the right input, 80% of patients with Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) can expect a complete resolution of symptoms, so there is really no need to suffer in silence.

Your appointment
During your initial appointment you will be able to discuss your difficulties and the results you would like to achieve with one of our specialist continence physiotherapists. The physiotherapist will also provide a vaginal examination to assess your pelvic floor and to ensure you are comfortably able to perform exercises before discussing your own individual, customised exercise programme.
Your tailored physiotherapy exercise programme can effectively prevent and manage incontinence by showing you how to:-
- Locate and effectively strengthen your pelvic floor muscles.
- Retrain your bladder for urge.
- Use bracing techniques called the KNACK to give support during activities where you would perhaps leak/lose urine.
Once you are feeling fully confident and comfortable in completing the exercises, they can usually be continued independently at home without the need for long term clinic intervention or visits.
We also offer our clients specialist physiotherapy-led Pilates, as a gentle and effective method of stretching and strengthening core muscles involved in continence. Your specialist physiotherapist would be happy to discuss the potential benefits of this complementary therapy with you during your treatment.
Initial consultation appointments are 45 minutes and we would request you wear comfortable, loose clothing for the purposes of the assessment by the physiotherapist.
Throughout your specialist postnatal or continence physiotherapy treatment, we will always work closely with our wider physiotherapy team and will refer you for further medical consultation, if required.
