Physiotherapist-led Pilates classes

All of our Pilates classes are taught by a physiotherapist, so they are like a physiotherapy treatment for you each time. We also follow The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Quality Assurance Standards with each class delivered.

Pilates is appropriate for people of all ages, providing they can follow instruction and can get down to a mat on the floor independently – a chair can be provided to assist with this, if required at first. You can often start physiotherapy-led Pilates whilst you are continuing with your treatment or post-operative rehab.

All Marple Physiotherapy Pilates classes are kept to a maximum of 12 attendees, so you will receive lots of individual attention and monitoring.

Induction sessions

Participants are asked to attend a personal induction session before commencing any of our classes. This is to allow the physiotherapist to better understand any problems you may have with your movement or your health, and to identify any unique areas of need, which can be addressed during the classes.

You will also receive a detailed instruction on the core muscles, what they feel like when they are recruited, and the founding principles of Pilates (known as the 5 Key Elements), to ensure the correct technique.

Following your induction session, you will also be provided with a video demonstration for you to practise at home, prior to attending your first class. Personal induction sessions are 30 minutes and priced at £36.

1. Payable by standing order on the 20th of each month. Please note that all prices are effective as of 1st February 2024.

Modified Pilates

Modified or clinical Pilates consists of strength, mobilising and stabilising exercises, which can be beneficial for those experiencing pain or weakness, or to anyone who wants to start exercising again, but may be concerned about aggravating an existing injury or condition.

Benefits range from improved posture, flexibility, strength and co-ordination, to relief from lower back and neck pain as well as improving muscle tone, especially in the abdominal, buttock and hip region.

We offer private Pilates consultations as well as beginner and intermediate Pilates classes.

Private Pilates consultations

Our APPI Health Group trained Pilates physiotherapist offers the long-term benefits of individual specialist Pilates consultations and personalised exercise programmes.

This expertise allows our specialist to make small adjustments to your body ensuring that the correct body part “drives” the particular exercise. Each exercise is then modified specifically for you, enabling you to get so much more out of your Pilates practice.

Individual specialist scoliosis Pilates sessions are also available and include an assessment and personalised programme designed to correct and maintain spine curve and rotation, and keep in control of any related pain.

Your private modified Pilates consultation

During your consultation, you will be able to discuss any condition, pain or discomfort you are experiencing, and/or any improved sports performance you would like to achieve.

Our highly experienced Pilates physiotherapy practitioner will then complete a lifestyle review and ‘head-to-toe’ biomechanical posture assessment before discussing achievable short and long-term goals with you.

In order to ascertain which particular exercises will be most beneficial for you, posture observations are made throughout the consultation; this includes sitting, standing, walking, and other day to day actions such as squatting and standing on one leg. These observations also allow baseline measurement of balance, initial core strength, or any muscle imbalances that may be present.

Our Pilates physiotherapist will then fully explain their findings before devising your unique Pilates home exercise programme, tailored to your individual requirements and taking into account your occupation, sports, and hobbies.

Your consultation provides an opportunity to practise exercises under the guidance of our expert modified Pilates physiotherapy practitioner. Video demonstrations of your prescribed exercises are then emailed to you, ensuring that you are fully confident in completing exercises independently at home.

Private physiotherapy-led Pilates consultations are £65 and last 45 minutes. You will be asked to wear comfortable, stretchy clothing, such as jogging bottoms or leggings. Modified Pilates exercises are typically practised in socks. All equipment is provided.

Please note that prices are effective as of 1st April 2023.

Remote individual Pilates consultations

These begin with an interview (known as a subjective assessment), just as our physiotherapy assessments do. We take a history of your health, any conditions, pain, or injury you would like addressing, and any overall targets you would like to achieve.

We will then do an observational physical assessment looking at your natural posture and how you move. You will then be taught what your ‘core’ muscles are and how to feel them working (this is much easier than it sounds!).

A personal Pilates programme will be formulated to address your individual goals. You will be taught each exercise within the session, and then be sent an email of the exercise program to work on in between sessions. Each exercise is accompanied by written instructions and a video to remind you of the technique.

Here's what our clients say.

Paul M. ★★★★★ My 13 year old son was suffering from a lower back issue that was stopping him football training and playing for over 4 weeks and it was really getting him down. A single appointment at Marple physio did the trick. The issue was quickly diagnosed, treated and he was left feeling much better with some exercises that have completed his recovery. I would highly recommend Marple Physio.G B ★★★★★ I went to Marple Physio during pregnancy as I was having problems with pelvic girdle pain and hypermobility. Before I started, I was struggling to walk up stairs without being in a lot of pain, had disturbed sleep from it and was dreading things getting worse in my final few months of pregnancy.Over my sessions Nicky gave me exercises that were manageable and safe, but still felt like they were making a big difference to my pain and also building up my strength. Pretty quickly I found my pain easing up and by my final session at 36 weeks, I felt in so much better shape than when I first started!I’d recommend Nicky to anyone needing support, but especially when pregnant. She was very approachable and really listened to what I needed and what I felt I could do as my pregnancy progressed.Amy W. ★★★★★ Brilliant service. Helped me so much with my low back pain. Saw a couple of other people at other clinics before working with Liz and she was hands down the best!Rose-Marie W. ★★★★★ I saw Nicky for pain in my c section scar which was affecting me on a daily basis. She was great at coming up with different treatments (exercises, physical manipulation and a cream) which have improved the pain I was experiencing.Helen Q. ★★★★★ Liz and colleagues have been treating my son for many years and are fantastic with him. Although his condition will never change keeping him free from discomfort and moving the muscles he can’t use are invaluable to his quality of life. We can’t thank and praise them enough not only for their knowledge but for their care, commitment and respect shown to us allSte W. ★★★★★ I went to Marple Physiotherapy with what I assumed was a sore neck, but it turned out to be my shoulder. After many sleepless nights in agony I went to see Liz, who after two visits got me back to normal. Everything from what she did in the practice to the exercises see gave me to do at home is geared up to promote a speedy recovery and her knowledge is incredible. Can’t recommend them enough.Andreea D. ★★★★★ Excellent input from Liz during my recovery after rather complex knee ligament injury. She provided step-by-step guidance with regards to specific exercises for every stage of the recovery alongside therapeutical ultrasound and massage. Highly recommendedEmily R. ★★★★★ From the get go, I have been really impressed with my treatment at Marple Physio and would recommend it to anyone with back troubles. The initial consultation was so thorough, I left feeling positive that I could improve my chronic pain. I really appreciated that Liz was able to explain the reasoning behind my long term back troubles (over compensation and shortened muscles etc.) She has given me a proactive treatment plan that I never got previously from other establishments and I have seen an improvement in my condition after only a few sessions.Simon T. ★★★★★ A massive thank you to Liz for getting me to the start line of the Manchester Marathon! Picking up an injury half way through training I feared the worst for the big day, but a swift treatment cycle had me back up and running in a couple of weeks. I had plantar fasciitis which I have heard keep people out for months on end so such a huge thank you for the wonderful care provided to help me back to my feet.js_loader
